What is a filter press?

A filter press is a piece of equipment that uses pressure filtration to separate solids from liquids. In practice, the process is simple: pump a slurry into the press, which will de-water the slurry under pressure. The filtering itself is done with a cloth over a steel frame.

These filter presses have four main components:

• the frame (A),
• filter plates (B),
• manifold (C),
• and filter cloth (not pictured).

The steel frame acts as the clamping device for the plates, so the plates can be squeezed together, liquid-tight.

The liquid-tight plates are pushed together (via clamping) onto the frame. The manifold of the system consists of stainless steel piping and directs the liquid into the machine and through the plates leaving behind solid material, while the purified liquid makes its way back to be collected via the discharge pipes.

The filter plates contain a filter cloth, which removes solids and leaves them to be built up on the screen rather than be drawn through with the liquid. This effectively separates the solids from the liquid. Once the chambers are full of material, the plates can be separated, and the solid fatty cakes can be removed.

How does a filter press work?

Filtering is an important process when trying to purify substances, as many contaminants may be easily removed through filtration. Filter presses can be used for a variety of applications such as in the oil industry, large scale vehicle washing, wastewater treatment and much more.

The saturated solution can be pumped into the filter plates that are stacked inline with each other. This initiates the filtration process, and the liquid will be pushed through the plates, leaving behind any solid materials such as carbon, waxes, fats and plant biomass.

This leaves a much cleaner product (at a much faster pace) than regular filtration normally would, due to the pressure applied within these units.

The unit’s connections are stainless steel with tri-clamp fittings, ensuring the tight fit needed for handling high pressures, while also allowing the machine to be disassembled for quick cleaning.
