The clamp itself is coated, to protect your glass from taking unwanted shock or pressure. Once the chain is hooked up, you can adjust the tightness of the clamp with the knob on the back, getting just the right grip on your glassware.
These chain clamps are usually used for such glassware such as cold traps and other pieces of scientific glassware that require support.
Note: Be careful not to over-tighten the chain clamp, to avoid damage or breakage to your glass.
